The Four Loves - Anna Harrison

In doing research for my term paper, I read The Four Loves by C. S. Lewis. This book describes the different types of loves according to Lewis: agape (charity), philia (friendship), storge (affection), and eros. I found the idea of different forms of love interesting, as we tend to think of love as something romantic. My paper focused mainly on storge, and Lewis describes this type of love as affection, the love between a parent and child. This love goes beyond that, though. Love as storge is unconditional. We have all heard the saying "love is blind", and I think that mostly refers to this type of love. It does not care if the recipient of the love is ugly or stupid or capable of giving love in return. In the traditional sense of love, I think a combination of these various forms is important. Lasting love needs the unconditional affection of storge, the sacrifices of agape, the friendship of philia, as well as the sensual aspect from eros.
