Grace in Practice - Anna Harrison
I read portions of "Grace in Practice: A Theology of Everyday Life" by Paul Zahl as research for my term paper. Zahl explains the concept of grace in his book, stating that grace is essentially undeserved love. "Grace is love that seeks you out when you have nothing to give in return." I enjoyed reading through his ideas and learning more about what grace is. I have attended church my entire life and heard the word over and over, but I never really understood what it meant, though I just might not have been paying attention. It is the idea of loving your neighbor simply regardless of whether they have earned it. Paul Zahl also writes that grace has a domino effect, which I thought was an interesting idea. He also cites 1 John 4:19: "we love because he loved us first", which relates to this concept. To me, that means that God provided the blueprint for what love should be. It allows us to know what it should look like and, as a result, how to love others.
