Rob Martine Film Technique

Bunny:
Bunny is an animated short film about an elderly bunny who is trying to get rid of an irritating moth. Once the bunny captures the moth, she angrily mixes it with the cake she is making and bakes it in the oven. Tired from chasing the moth around, the bunny falls asleep and has a vivid dream about following the moth into the lit up oven. The audience then finds out that the bunny actually died instead of falling sleep. The bunny then reunites with her already deceased husband. This has an interesting irony showing that moths naturally are attracted to lights whereas "going towards the light" symbolizes death. Personally, I would be horrified of this if I watched it as a child. However, it is a creative film.

Harold and Maude:
Harold and Maude is full of symbolism and life lessons. Harold merely wants her mother's care instead of her trying to set him up with a girl. He constantly fakes suicides to get rid of the girls and finds pleasure in it. His grim outlook on life is countered by Maude's realistic yet optimistic outlook on life. When asked what flower he would be, Harold responds, "these because they are all the same." Maude points out that although they may look the same from a distance, once you get closer, every lilly is different in its own unique way. She teaches Harold that he should embrace his differences because that is what makes him beautiful.

Pink Floyd:
Pink Floyd's album animation was full of trippy imagery that portrayed what the outcome of war is. Although victories are celebrated and used as prestige for countries, it is truly a gruesome and horrific aspect of the world. They advocate for world peace by illustrating the sad truths of war. In Another Brick in the Wall, Pink Floyd has almost an anarchical opinion about the education system. It shows students lining up to be put through a machine, illustrating the education's limit on creativity. "We don't need no education" is a powerful statement that tells kids to follow their own path in life, instead of just going through a machine that produces conditioned minds.

Paris Texas:
In this film, communication is the main theme. Travis, who went through a traumatic experience, cannot talk until the very end of the film. He communicates his feelings to others through his actions such as patting the man on the back who is screaming to the highway as well as polishing his aunt's shoes. At the end, he speaks to his ex-wife even though she cannot see him and she does not know it is him. He finally expresses his feelings towards the whole situation instead of just fighting about it. The main message is how things can be resolved by merely listening to one another instead of merely voicing your own opinion.

Northfork:
Northfork takes place in a vast and dull wasteland where two men are trying to get people to move out of their properties. The church service stood out to me because the pastor preaches in front of the land that God created, a beautiful valley filled with mountains and animals. Throughout the film God's creation and the creations of man (dam, houses) are at odds, and finding the perfect mix is nearly impossible to do.

  1. I appreciate the fact that you touched on the Paris Texas film given that I straight up forgot to include that film on my essay. I agree with your conclusion on the main theme of this film being that communication is the key factor of what ultimately split people apart as well a brought people together in the end. One thing i noted about the main character was that through his traumatic experiences he had learned that communication with others led him to pain and ultimately was the cause of he wife leaving. In response to these unfortunate events, he seeks to disassociate and cut himself off from the world entirely venturing out into deserted lands on his own. In response to his disappearance, those closest to him set out to reconnect with him and have him return to civilization. I also agree with your statement of communication having to be a two way street instead of one that solely emphasizes the feeling of one person over another's. This, I believe, is what came to be in the way of the main characters ability to relate to others, as he can see when he passes by the lost man on the bridge who is angrily yelling over a highway of moving cars who have no idea that they are missing a mans external monologue, this is also represented symbolically in his ex-wife's place of work where only he can see her while she is unable to see him which symbolizes a one sided conversation where things can be construed to look like one thing when in reality they are something entirely different, such as the wife looking to be in a well put together state of being where as, in reality, her side of the room is not even finished being put together and her clothes barely fit although the husband cannot see that. The purpose of this metaphor was to emphasize the fact that if one is not completely open with the way things are in their lives then there is no way for others to understand the place that they are in mentally.
